Musical Interests

In my recent pieces, there is an emphasis on the creation of more complex structures both on the microlevel and on the macrolevel, and a careful treatment of the interrelation between material, structure and space. This preoccupation with structure and material, without neglecting the sound, stands against the current consensus that claims that the only way possible for the public to understand a piece is when the piece has a “natural”, simple, and univocal form (or material). Additionally, this complex structure stands precisely against the paternalist attitude towards the listeners, who are supposed to be unable to understand more “complex music”. The pieces are thereby an attempt against the mechanism that relegates music and art in general to a commodity, a “decorative art”, something incapable of making a statement on its own. In addition, my work asks the listener not to be passively consumed, but to be a site for active exploration. The pieces invite us to follow them until the end, to encounters them. A complex structure is thus not understood as something “elitist”, an old-fashioned totalitarianism, but as something in a search of an impossible truth. Through complex structures, my works are not searching to “express the individuality-sensibility” and the “difference” of the author, but a place to encounter the other. Art should appeal to the listener not by becoming simple, commodified or by becoming the “self-expression” of an artist, in conclusion not by losing its truth, but by really creating new possibilities. That is really something very rare and difficult, but that we should try and thereby, at the same time, re-claim art for us, the people, again.
