(EN) Anabasis (the marching republic of Xenophon) is here understood as the need to redefine the idea of a “we”. A new “we” against the idea of totalitarian regimes, or what Sartre called the “terror – fraternity”, (the “we” as superior “I”), but also against the postmodernist idea of the impossibility of creating a collective subject and the conclusion that the only possibility is individuals in mutual competition for happiness of the currently societies. The new “we” is what Alain Badiou called “a disparate ‘we’ of togetherness”. That ‘we’ is not easy or evident but “something inscribed between narrow walls” (“schmal zwischen Mauern geschriebne”, Anabasis, Paul Celan) and, unlike a “multicultural tolerance” that integrates/tolerates the other in its own order,it is what Paul Celan proposed in his poem Anabasis: a real encounter with the other. The emphasis of Anabasis lies on a complex form and structure and their interrelation with the material and the spatialization. This stems from the negation of the preconception of a natural, eternal, and univocal way of perceiving, that cannot be changed. It also stands against the paternalist attitude towards the listeners who are supposed to be unable to understand more “complex music”. In doing so, the piece with its complex structure is an attempt against the mechanism that relegates music to a commodity, a “decorative art”, something incapable of making a statement on its own. So, the piece asks the listener not to be passively consumed, but to be a site for active and individual exploration. The piece invites us to follow it until the end, to encounter it.
